The old English language, also called Anglo-Saxon, was the earliest form of English. It is difficult to give exact dates for the rise and development of a language, because it does not change suddenly; but perhaps it is true to say that Old English was spoken from about A.D.600 to about 1100.
The greatest old English poem is Beowulf, which belongs to the seventh century. It is story of about 3.000 lines, and is the first English epic. The name of its author is unknown.
Beowulf is not about England, but about Hrothgar, king of the Danes, who goes to help him. Hrothgar is in trouble. His great hall, called Heorot, is visited at night by a terrible creature, Grendel, which lives in a lake and comes to kill and eat Hrothgar's men. One night Beowulf waits secretly for this thing, attacks it, and in a fierce fight pulls its arm off. It manages to reach the lake again, but dies there. Then its mother comes to the hall in search of revenge, and the attacks begin again. Beowulf follows her to the bottom of the lake and kills her there.

Thereare millions of plants and animals living in the sea. Most of the plants andanimals living in the oceans are extremely small and float near the surface ofthe water in their thousands. They are food for huge numbers of small animalsthat also live near the surface. Together, they are all known as plankton.
Many fish feed on this plankton, including one of the largest, the whale shark.Despite their great size, certain whales live entirely on plankton.
The blue whale is the largest animal ever to live. It grows to a length of over100 feet. The humpback whale is a smaller kind and has long flippers. It canjump right out the water. The Californian grey whale makes long migrationsevery year - it spends the summer feeding in the Arctic but swims south to hewarmer waters off the coast of Mexico in the winter. The females give birth inthe shallow, warm water there.
Many of the fish in the sea may be eaten by other meat-eaters. Sharks, for example, area some of the fastest hunters, although not all of them eatother fish. Deep down in the oceans live many strange fish. It is so dark downthere that many of these fish have 'light' on them, which are usedfor attracting smaller fish for the larger ones to eat.
Jellyfish are peculiar-looking creatures ranging in size from a fraction of aninch to 6 feet across. They don't really swim but drift in the currents of theopen oceans. Although they contain a powerful sting, they are often eaten byturtles. Turtles are reptiles that spend most of their eggs on sandy beaches.
